Life, hospitals and Harry Potter
For those of you who don't know I spent most the last week in the hospital with a staff infection. It was oodles of fun and I'm just restraining myself from running screaming for the hills at the thought of the final bill. Also, I was told when I called in to work today that my being gone really upset things for the other clerks (there are three of them who all work 6-3, I'm the only one who works 9-6) and so we'd probably be having a meeting about the whole inconvenience tomorrow. To which my mental response is BLOW ME, I was in the freaking hospital for 5 days. Like I care what you had to do to make it work.
I need a new job.
Though now, thanks to the large horse pills and massive amounts of IV antibiotics I feel better than I have in weeks. Plus, I go on vacation starting Friday, so bully for me!
On to more important matters, the new Harry Potter book was pretty good, but obviously my personal cannon will diverge in certain ways.
1) Snape does not die.
2) Draco and Ginny end up together, mostly because of the endless amounts of discomfort the pairing will bring to all related in-laws. Also, because I'm dying to see Ginny both keep Draco in line, and send Lucius a howler in the middle of an important meeting because he said some kind of 'pureblood nonsense' in front of his grandkid.
3) Fred does not die, instead he and George pick some very accepting witches to mary and have a very polyamorous household - of which Molly knows nothing about *nothing about she says*.
4) Harry spends a year in therapy, travels the world a bit and ends up on the stoop of one Severus Snape with a business proposition. They both live snarkily ever after.
5) Snape does not die.
Things I loved:
- PERCY!!!!! I knew you wouldn't be a death eater, no matter what everyone said. I knew you just wouldn't do that to me! *hearts Percy*
Things I was ambivalent about:
- Lupin... You know as much as I love Lupin I do realize that SOMEBODY has to die, it is a war. Plus with all the Remus ANGST I've put myself through over the years (really, this character just breaks my heart every time) it was kind of a relief.
Things I HATED:
1) That the entirety of Slytherin House abandoned Hogwarts. I LOATHE JKR for her ability to callously make the entire house either evil or cowards. It's horribly wrong and makes me furious.
2) If you had to have the maudlin epilogue you could at least have made it where there was some change. Asolat made the point that the whole thing seemed to be stuck in some kind of 50's-ish ideal and no real social progress had been made, despite all the issues that were raised and the fact that these are *some of the most important people in Wizarddom*.
3) That nothing changed with Draco and JKR left him looking almost Pettigrewish in the end. As a character he deserved so much more, and as fans we deserved so much more.
All and all I liked it, but as usual I like the universe in my head best.
And since I'm on HP fandom lines I've got to say this:
You know all those fics where one character or another is reduced to poverty by the ministry seizing their property? Never happen, and the best reason for that is the Goblins. Even if the Ministry was to try to seize all property the Goblins would never give it to them. Hence the fact that the Malfoys have massive wealth despite Lucius's conviction, and Sirius still has access to his accounts after escaping from Azkaban. Don't tell me that the Ministry wouldn't seize it all if they could. Presumably any wizard with their head on straight would have the deeds to their property stored at Gringots as well, hence the Ministry would be unable to seize anything they couldn't carry with them from the property. That's presuming that the home isn't unplotable/secret kept of course.
